Spring WHAM Registration is Open!

Did watching the USA Hockey Teams win gold spark your dreams of becoming an olymipc hockey player?

Spring WHAM is newbie-friendly, so it is a great time to start learning, play with friends and family, and introduce new players to hockey. Join us for 6 weeks of hockey this spring. Co-Rec begins April 12 and Women+ begins April 13.

Note: USA Hockey Membership ($52/yr) is required to register.

Cost:

Skaters: $120 (Early Bird Pricing through March 22! $130 after that.)
Goalies: Free! Inspired by Aerin Frankel? Spring is a great time to try out this position. We even have gear you can use!

We have one more clinic for the 2025-2026 season! This clinic will focus on specific stickhandling techniques like cupping, top hand control, dekes, toe drags, and keeping your head up.

Goalies will cover butterfly slides, when and how to move up and down during plays and tracking.

Join us for a clinic devoted entirely to shooting skills! Hone in your shooting technique by learning from the best. Pat Ortmeyer and Cathy Scribner will be coaching skaters and Taylor Flandro will be coaching goalies on how to block all those sweet shots the skaters are practicing 😉

It’s time for the Final games to end the 2025-2026 Winter Season!! During the final games, we will be having our annual TTT Party! Team assignments for what to bring for the tacos is on our website at whammt.org and it’s a BYOB event. We will have vegetarian protein options available!

Don’t forget one of the most important parts of the TTT party, Donating Toiletries/ Hygienic products for school resource centers and other non-profits! The team with the most donations will be crowned “The Super Duper Team of the Year!”

With only 2 games left in the Winter Season, Spring is right around the corner. WHAM+’s Spring Season has a Women’s + league and a Co-Rec league. Registration opens this Friday 2/27 at 8am! The registration fee is 120$ for early bird registration! After March 22nd, registration will go to regular price of 130$. We hope see you on the ice this Spring!

We have an upcoming clinic for Novice/Intermediate skaters and goalies! Skaters and goalies are invited to freshen up on basics, learn some new tricks and to practice their skills with experienced coaches giving feedback along the way. Grace Hoene and Morgan Voss will be coaching skaters and Taylor Flandro will be coaching goalies. Skaters will focus on some interactive passing, shooting and defending drills and goalies will work on tracking, hand work, foot work and general best practices.

This FREE clinic is geared toward beginner to intermediate adult (18+) skaters/goalies and is open to both our Womens+ and co-rec members. As defined by the Chicago Wolves, a “celly” (short for celebration) is a player’s expression of joy and excitement after scoring a goal. Check out some examples from PWHL and NHL.

This clinic will spend time learning how to fall on the ice and get back up quickly, which is a skill that will improve your game and just be really fun to do for an hour on a Sunday night. The drills are great practice for goalies and we will have some goalie specific skills to practice as well. At the end of the clinic, everyone will debut their new Celly for the world to see!

Here’s a special event at the glacier ice rink that you can attend to help with Missoula Youth Hockey!

WHAM+’s hearts are broken in a million pieces. Skyla Sisco is a beloved community member, business leader, Ultimate Frisbee player, hockey player, Lady Griz Hall of Fame standout, and member of WHAM+. Her athletic greatness pales in comparison to the incredible impact she had on those around her. We, among so many, are grieving her loss and celebrating her beautiful, fierce, and loving life-force that so many of us were lucky to share with her. Our thoughts go to her family, friends, and all who loved her.

Before the coached scrimmage on Sunday October 26, be sure to watch through this chalk talk from NHL Legend Garry Swain and Legendary coach Greg Steen! Soak up this invaluable advice and tips about positioning, strategy, and etiquette. Below are the points covered in the video!

1. Hockey is best as a team. Be aware of where your other teammates are on the ice to pass to them or support them. (Head on a swivel)

2. Be a part of the play. Go for the puck if you are in position to retrieve it. If your teammate is on the puck, anticipate and move to an open space on the ice to get a pass.

3. Defense wins games. On defense, your job is to cut off time and space. You can use your body to get in the way of the player with the puck (see videos)

4. In the defensive zone, keep focus on the player attacking the goal to get in their way and cause chaos. Don't worry about the puck. Your teammates will get the puck.

5. On offense, your job is to get to the puck, get open, and get to the net. Be aware of where your teammates are so that one person is going to the puck, one is at the top of the kitchen, and one is back of net or on at the net.

6. On offense, most shots are made from the kitchen (area in front of the goal). Even on breakaways, only 20% of first shots get in. Be ready and in position for the rebound and second shot.

7. Short shifts. Each shift should be 45 seconds to 1:30 max! Hustle on your shift. If you are tired, get off. If you are not tired, get off. On defense, if the puck is stuck in your zone and everyone is tired, intentionally ice the puck to get a shift change

This Sunday 10/26 NHL Legend Gary Swain is coaching WHAM+’s Winter Season Opening Scrimmage 8:30PM-10:30PM in the Outdoor Rink! Winter Teams will be rotating through for a half hour scrimmage!

Here are the Scrimmage times for the Gary Swain Scrimmage on Sunday 10/26! There will also be a Gear Swap at 7:30pm where you can bring gear of all sorts and swap/give to your fellow players!

We just started Fall season and we’re already getting ready for Winter!

WHAM Winter Registration is opening this Friday at 8am! Registration will be on our website at whammt.org
Costs: Early Bird 285$ until October 17th, After October 17th it’s 295$. Goalies are free!
The Season starts October 26th with a Guided Scrimmage Coached by Former NHL Player Gary Swain, at 8:30-10:30pm.
Each team will play 15 regular season games and 3 playoff season games. Game times: Fridays at 8pm, 9:15pm, & 10:30pm, and Sundays at 4pm. Each team will play one game a weekend.
First games will be Sunday November 2nd and Fridays November 7th!

Don’t forget to Mark your calendars for the Winter Season Kickoff party! October 23rd @paradisefallsmissoula from 6-8pm! Teams will get to meet each other and choose their team name!

Hey WHAMMERS! Ever wonder what to tell the person when they ask how you want your skates sharpened? Wonder no more! Here's a handy chart to help you understand what you might need. There are other factors to consider but generally beginners should go for the right side (more bite, less glide) as they are learning how to feel their edges. Once you get more familiar with your edges, you can start trying shallower depths (more glide, less bite).
